Preview: Timberwolves vs Mavericks - Edwards vs Doncic, Timberwolves in Better Form for Win Streak

At 7:30 PM on October 30, the NBA regular season continues with the Minnesota Timberwolves hosting the Dallas Mavericks.

The Timberwolves completed a major trade this summer, sending away Karl-Anthony Towns and bringing in Julius Randle and D’Angelo Russell. This move did not significantly weaken their roster. Currently, the Timberwolves have a record of 2-1, losing only their opening game to the Lakers and subsequently defeating the Kings and Raptors, achieving a two-game winning streak. In these games, Anthony Edwards has been outstanding, averaging 27.7 points per game; Randle, after a period of adjustment in his first game, scored 33 points in the second and 24 in the third, blending well with the team.

For the Timberwolves, they reached the Western Conference Finals last season, and their goal this season is to go even further. Although they lost Towns, if Randle and Russell can integrate successfully, the effect will still be positive, at least adding depth to the roster. While it’s unfortunate that Towns left, the first three games of the new season have shown that Randle and Russell have proven their value. Additionally, the Timberwolves have solidified Edwards’ position, allowing him to focus more on offense, averaging 23.3 shot attempts per game.

The Mavericks also made significant moves this summer, signing Klay Thompson to add a more accurate shooter alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, which is a significant upgrade over Tim Hardaway Jr. The Mavericks currently have a 2-1 record, and they are playing back-to-back against the Timberwolves. In their previous game, they defeated the Jazz 110-102, but Doncic had a poor performance, shooting 5-for-22 and 1-for-9 from three-point range, scoring just 15 points. However, Irving contributed 23 points and 9 assists, and Thompson added 18 points, securing the win for the team.

Despite Thompson’s addition, the Mavericks have not yet demonstrated strong offensive firepower this season, averaging only 110.7 points per game, ranking 23rd in the league. This is primarily due to their poor three-point shooting, hitting only 34.7% of their 41.3 three-point attempts per game, placing them in the lower half of the league. Thompson is currently meeting the team’s expectations, averaging 19.7 points and shooting 45.5% from three-point range. However, the team’s core player, Doncic, seems to be out of rhythm, averaging 27.7 points but with a shooting percentage of only 36.1%, needing to improve his efficiency.

This is the first meeting between the two teams this season. Last season, the Mavericks swept the Timberwolves 4-1 in the Western Conference Finals before losing to the Celtics in the NBA Finals. This time around, the Timberwolves will be looking to exact revenge, especially with the advantage of playing at home, while the Mavericks are facing their second game in as many nights. Overall, the Timberwolves have the edge in this matchup.
