Recently, former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp appeared on the Cross brothers’ talk show ‘Einfach mal Lupen’ and revisited the two Champions League finals his team faced against Real Madrid.
During his time at Liverpool, Klopp’s team met Real Madrid in the Champions League final twice, but both times they ended up losing. In the 2018 Champions League final, Mohamed Salah was taken down by Ramos during a challenge, dislocating his shoulder and forcing him to leave the game.
Now, when talking about Ramos, Klopp still expresses his dislike for the player, saying, “Is Ramos a good guy? He is not my favorite player; his actions are very rough. Of course, he didn’t know he had injured someone’s shoulder, but we all knew he was happy about it. I can never understand that kind of mentality, and I have never coached a player like that. If I had, I would have let him go.”
Cross then said, “Sergio is a good teammate.” Klopp responded, “I find it hard to believe. He might not be my favorite player, but that doesn’t matter.”
Cross asked Klopp if he would want Ramos on one of his teams, and Klopp firmly replied, “I always demand that my center-backs are excellent and do not get involved in such actions.”
In addition, Klopp also discussed the 2022 Champions League final against Real Madrid: “Real Madrid is a machine focused on results, especially in the Champions League, it’s really crazy. They don’t always perform well, but we should have won the final against Courtois, and it was really hard to accept.”
“In that final, Courtois’ gloves were almost worn out, and no one could explain to me why we lost in the end. I have never seen a team as unaffected by pressure as Real Madrid. Everything seems to be part of their plan: first, we withstand the opponent’s offensive firepower, and then deliver the decisive blow at the crucial moment.”
