Auxerre Launches Rare Written Protest in Ligue 1, Post-Match Decision on Penalty Reversal Pending

According to Marca, in the match between Lyon and Auxerre, the Auxerre captain lodged a “technical reservation” against a penalty awarded to Lyon by the referee, sparking widespread debate.

Referee decisions in football matches often become points of contention, but the incident between Lyon and Auxerre was unusual. Initially, the referee awarded a goal kick to Auxerre, but then the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervened, advising the main referee, Jérémie Stinat, to review a possible foul on Lyon player Mikautadze. After the review, the referee changed his decision to a penalty, which immediately caused dissatisfaction among the Auxerre players. The coach even instructed the players to leave the field as a form of protest.

Auxerre’s anger stemmed not only from the penalty itself but also from the fact that play had already resumed before VAR asked the referee to review the footage. This chaotic situation led to the dismissal of an assistant coach from the visiting team. Following this, the drama escalated: the Auxerre captain submitted a formal written document requesting a “technical reservation,” an official protest method allowed in Ligue 1 to challenge the referee’s decision.

In such circumstances, the validity of the penalty will be determined after the match. In other words, whether the goal scored by Lyon from this penalty is valid will need to be confirmed through further post-match review.

Despite this, the match continued and ended with a 2-2 draw.

However, the impact of these events may extend beyond the match. According to the rules of the French Professional Football League (LFP), if Auxerre’s “technical reservation” is deemed valid, the match could be ordered to be replayed.

According to Article 559 of the LFP regulations: “After the match, the referee must record the ‘technical reservation.’ However, the reservation will only be considered if the governing committee determines that a technical error affected the match result.”

The regulation also states: “To make this reservation effective, it must be submitted in writing to the headquarters of the LFP within 48 hours.”

“Subsequently, the LFP will forward the relevant documents to the Refereeing Committee of the French Football Federation for a decision. The latter will determine whether to uphold the original match result or order a replay of the match.”
