On July 16th local time, the 2024 US Open announced the main draw lists for men’s and women’s singles. The last Grand Slam event of the year will take place in grand style at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center from August 26th to September 8th. A total of 11 members of Team China are on the list, including Zheng Qinwen, Wang Xinyu, Yuan Yue, Zhu Lin, Wang Xiyu, Wang Yafan, Zhang Shuai, Zheng Saisai, Wang Qiang, Zhang Zhizhen, and Shang Juncheng. Among them, Zhang Shuai, Zheng Saisai, and Wang Qiang are participating with protected rankings. This is also the second time that Shang Juncheng has qualified directly by ranking since Wimbledon this year. Buyun Chaokete, Bai Zhuoxuan, Wei Sijia, Gao Xinyu, and You Xiaodi have already secured their spots in the qualifying rounds of this year’s US Open, where they will strive for a spot in the main draw.

Four-time champion Nadal has entered using a protected ranking. The Spanish maestro only participated in one US Open post-pandemic in 2022, where he was stopped in the round of 16 by Tiafoe. Apart from Nadal and the three aforementioned Chinese players, ten other players are participating in this US Open with protected rankings. They are Busta, Shapovalov, Opelka, Kwon Soon-woo, Stricker, Tomljanovic, Rogers, Davis, Grabher, and Bacher. This year’s US Open will be the first Grand Slam event for American player Opelka since 2022, as the big-serving American has been plagued by injuries in recent years. He made his official comeback at this week’s Newport grass court tournament.

Notably, as many as five former champions cannot directly qualify due to low rankings and will need a wildcard to enter the main draw, or else they will have to compete in the qualifying rounds. These five individuals are Osaka, Andreescu, Kerber, Wawrinka, and Thiem. Among them, Thiem has stated that he will retire at the end of 2024, and the full list of wildcards has yet to be revealed. Thanks to her excellent performance during the grass court season (semifinalist at Nottingham, quarterfinalist at Eastbourne, round of 16 at Wimbledon), 2021 champion Raducanu returned to the top 100 this week, securing her spot in the main draw of the US Open in time.
Osaka has won the US Open twice (2018, 2020)
